What I love about this air fryer recipe is that it’s a great way to make the cooking process fun. So many times we get in a cooking rut where we’re just making the same things over and over again - and this is where this cheese rollup is a game changer! The gooey cheese paired with the crisp bread is hard to top - especially when you use good-quality cheese! (This doesn’t mean that you can’t use any cheese option that you have - but there is a taste difference!) I also failed to mention the best part - that these cheese dippers only take three simple ingredients! You’re going to love this easy meal!

Ingredients:

Bread - You can use wheat bread or any sandwich bread that you have. American Cheese - Have fun with the cheese! Kraft singles are great, but sharp cheddar, Monterey Jack, swiss cheese, or even Colby jack cheese are all great, too. Salted Butter - If all you have is unsalted butter, it will still be fine but just won’t have an extra salty kick. (but with the cheese, you might not even notice it)

How to make Air Fryer Grilled Cheese Roll Ups

NOTE: I make this recipe in my Cosori 5.8 qt. air fryer or 6.8 quart air fryer. Depending on your air fryer, size and wattages, cooking time may need to be adjusted 1-2 minutes.

Variations

Add some meat - This would be so good with some Air Fryer Ham in the middle of the slices of cheese! Use cream cheese - If you want to make a single layer of cream cheese on the bread after you flatten it, this would add a fun spin and give a creamy texture to each and every bite. Change up the second batch - I’m all for consistency, but this recipe is too fun to pass up a chance to change. Change the melty cheese for a different cheesy goodness flavor each time you make it! Add tomato - If you’re a fan of adding tomatoes to your grilled cheese, why not add a thin slice of tomato to this?!

Top Tip

A slice of cheese works better for this delicious meal than shredded cheese. While you can use all different cheeses, this cheese roll-ups recipe is easy to make and have stay together when you use cheese slices. You shouldn’t have to spray the air fryer basket, but if you’re worried, give it a little coating with nonstick cooking spray. The last thing that you want to have to happen is for your piece of bread to stick to the basket!

How to serve

These golden brown treats are not only fun to make, but they’re super fun to eat as well. They’re perfect to dip into marinara sauce, or serve with a bowl of soup! (tomato soup is my favorite) You can also eat these with air fryer french fries and create a fun and delicious meal. For a really cool spin, dip them into some sour cream and salsa to add some heat!

How to store

This delicious dish is a great main meal to make, but you may find that you have some leftovers for the next day. Our recommendation for storing this cheese sandwich recipe is that you let them cool all the way and then store them in an airtight container in the fridge. You can add them to an airtight container or wrap them in plastic wrap to keep them fresh. To reheat, you’ll need 1-2 minutes. You can warm them over medium heat in a large skillet easily - just be sure that you stay close so that they don’t burn. You can also pop them into the microwave to warm up those cheese melts again. Also, a word of caution. When you reheat, the middle will be HOT, so be careful not to burn your mouth when you take a bite.

Does this taste like a regular grilled cheese sandwich?

It’s like the perfect combination of grilled cheese and mozzarella cheese sticks. The soft cheese is delicious and creates the perfect texture to pull apart and eat.

Can I use something besides butter for cooking grilled cheese?

You actually can. While butter is the most common, you can actually use mayonnaise instead of butter. I know, it sounds a bit crazy - but it works, and it’s yummy. Just replace the butter being spread on the bread with spreading a thin layer of mayo. Once it cooks up nice and crispy, it will look just like butter AND there is no taste of mayonnaise at all. We’ve been doing this for years - and it works!

What dips work with grilled cheese?

Marinara sauce is probably the most popular, but dip these into whatever you want! Ranch dressing, ketchup, hot sauce, salsa, or even more melted cheese? Anything works as long as your tastebuds like it. Have fun with the dips as this is an easy way to make each bite taste unique.

What soups pair best with melted cheese sandwiches and roll ups?

A bowl of tomato soup will always be at the top of our list. You can also make chicken noodle soup, broccoli and cheese soup, or any type of soup that you want. It’s a simple way to create a full meal with minimal time and effort.
